Quote of the Day

"What we need to acknowledge, now more than ever, is that we do not know everything. We cannot know everything. Knowledge changes. The only thing we can count on to see us through an uncertain future is our ability to ask questions."

Any advice or tips you can give me?

Hello all! I've just bought my first Mirabilia project (the Christmas tree 2009, have you seen it? It's so pretty!! I love the colours) and I'm going to buy another one, maybe Stargazer or a fairy one, once I can afford all the materials :D

The thing is though, they'll be the first projects I've ever done that are a) on evenweave linen instead of aida, and b) covered in beading.

So what I was wondering was, do any of you have any tips to share about beading? Like, do you just stitch them on with a half cross stitch or is there a more secure way you're supposed to do it? Is there anything that can make it easier/quicker?
And also, I'm going to use gridding for the first time since it's evenweave so the counting will be trickier anyway, but what kind of thread should I use for that? Some websites recommended using brightly coloured metallic thread to make it easier to see and pick out afterwards, and some said to use light coloured so that it doesn't stain the fabric and isn't too noticeable if you can't get it all out.

Everyone is so friendly and knowledgeable here, I thought it would be a good place to ask. Thank you for any help! And thank you for putting up with my ignorance! :)

Jo and Ellen centric recs (Gen, het, femslash)

Season 5 brought back two of my favorite characters on the show: Jo and Ellen Harvelle. In Good God Y'All (5x02) we learn that they've been hunting together, which eventually leads to their deaths in Abandon All Hope (5x10). As a tribute to two of the most kickass female characters on this show - in my opinion - I bring you recs centering around these two awesome ladies: Jo and Ellen.

They're mixed-genre (Gen, Het and Femslash), so hopefully there'll be something for everyone.

Gen

Built for Hurricanes by [info]scorpiod1 (R; ca. 3.8k)
Summary: Jo Harvelle doesn't have an epic destiny. -- Jo's story. From tending bar away from home, to how she learned to be a hunter on her own, and the kinds of trouble she got into and out of.

Negotiations by [info]dotfic (G; ca. 800 words)
Set before 5x02. Beautifully done from Ellen's POV how Jo and she do their first hunts together.

Your ears tuned to the roar by [info]musesfool (PG; ca. 1.5k)
In which Jo grows up. -- Various episodes of Jo's life. A coda to 5x10.

Het

A Lion-Hearted Girl (or: five things that never happened to Jo Harvelle) by [info]anythingbutgrey (Dean/Jo; unrated; ca. 1.2k)
Summary: Jo hears when Dean dies. Everyone does – it is the sort of whispered hunter talk that passes from state to state on the backbones of soldiers, whispers trapped in the dried cracks of their hands. -- Spoilers up to 5x02. Bittersweet and beautiful!

Femslash

This circus we're in by [info]hateable (Jo/Ruby; R; ca. 2.3k)
Summary: She tastes like Texas heat, like lemons and smoke and chapstick, and it’s really not Ruby’s fault if she’s too distracted to get into the I’m a demon, ask me how aspect of things. -- A stunning piece set in season 3.

As always, please feel free to rec me (and everybody else) pieces that are not linked here and that fit the theme and please enjoy. Don't forget to feed the authors!

Stitch and drive?

Just wondering...and rest assured I am not presently driving, not do I stitch while I am driving...does anyone else find they can stitch while riding in a car?

A Tale of Woe

I just had to share my tale with someone and thought that if anyone would understand then it would be you guys!

I have been working on Bothy Threads 'A Dictionary of Tea' for a couple of months now and am about 3/4 of the way through when I ran out of one of the colours. I thought this was strange, as with kits, you very rarely run out of thread.

Anyway, after much searching around and checking the carpet for fallen threads, and just as I was about to email them, I reread the instructions...

Over half of what I've stitched using two threads, I should have only used one! Well, I could have cried, I very nearly did. I was undecided for a while on whether to just buy more of the colour and carry on as I had been, but of course, now I know it's wrong, it's really bothering me, so I fear I will have to unpick all the mistakes and start again.

I feel like such a fool, I'm usually so good at reading the instructions!

So, I was thinking yesterday about how there is very little f/f kidfic, and, really, f/f schmoop AU fic in general, so I wrote this.

Coming Right Up, Danneel/Sophia (with a side of Jared/Jensen), 2200 words, PG. In which Sophia is a frazzled waitress, and Danneel is a hot nanny.

I hope to get better at this genre as I write it more. )
